Common questions

Frequently asked questions

A starting point for the questions that tend to come up before a first session. If yours isn't answered here, the free 15-minute consult is a good place to ask it.

About the practice

Working with a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).

What does “Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)” mean?
“Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)” is a category of registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). It applies to therapists who have completed an approved master’s-level program in psychotherapy or counselling, met CRPO’s entry-to-practice requirements, and are now practising independently while completing additional supervised practice hours toward the full RP designation. Qualifying registrants are regulated by CRPO and held to the same professional standards as RPs.
What's the difference between an RP, RP (Qualifying), Psychologist, and Social Worker in Ontario?
All four are regulated mental health professionals in Ontario, each governed by a different college. Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) and RP (Qualifying)s are regulated by CRPO. Psychologists are regulated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario — their training is doctoral or master’s level and typically includes psychological assessment and diagnosis in addition to therapy. Registered Social Workers (RSWs) are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, with training rooted in social work theory and a systems lens. Insurance plans often cover these titles differently — it’s worth checking your plan for the specific designation.
What ages do you work with?
Children (ages 6–12), youth (ages 13–17), and adults (18+). Sessions with younger clients usually include parent or caregiver involvement; sessions with teens balance their privacy with safety and family context.
Can I speak Tamil in sessions?
Yes. Sessions are conducted primarily in English, but Tamil is welcome to come into the room. Some things — family, food, grief, childhood — live more naturally in a first language. You don’t have to choose between languages here.

Booking & sessions

How sessions work and how to start.

How do I book a session?
The simplest way is to book a free 15-minute consult through the Jane App booking page. You can also email directly. After the consult, if it feels like a fit, we book a first full session.
What happens in a free 15-minute consult?
A short video call. You can share as much or as little as you want about what’s bringing you in. I’ll listen, answer any questions, and we can talk through what working together might look like. There’s no obligation to book a full session afterwards.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
Not at this time. Practice is fully virtual — secure video sessions delivered through Jane App. If in-person care would serve you better, please mention it during the consult; we can talk through what to look for.
Do you see clients outside Ontario?
No. Sessions are only with clients who are physically located in Ontario at the time of session. The reason is regulatory: psychotherapy is regulated province by province in Canada, and as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) registered with CRPO, my scope of practice is Ontario.
Is therapy covered by my insurance?
Many extended health plans in Ontario cover Registered Psychotherapist services, but coverage varies widely between plans. Before booking, it’s worth a quick call to your insurer to confirm whether your plan specifically covers a “Registered Psychotherapist” (the title matters — it’s different from “Psychologist” or “Social Worker”). OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy. The fees & insurance page has more detail.

Pace & process

How long, how often.

How often will we meet?
Most often, weekly or every other week to start. Cadence is something we figure out together based on what you need and what’s sustainable. Some clients drop to less frequent meetings as the work progresses.
How long does therapy take?
There isn’t one answer. Some clients come for a specific situation and finish in six to twelve sessions. Others work over a longer arc. We talk about pace and direction together, and you decide when you’re done.

Whether this is for you

If you're not sure.

How do I know if I need therapy?
You don’t need a clinical reason. Therapy can be useful when something feels stuck, when life transitions feel heavier than they should, when patterns keep repeating, or when you simply want a space to think more honestly than daily life allows. Curiosity is reason enough to book a consult.
What if I'm not sure therapy will help?
That uncertainty is one of the most common reasons people put off booking. The free 15-minute consult is built for exactly that — a low-pressure way to ask questions and see whether the fit feels right before committing to anything.

Confidentiality & safety

What's private, and what isn't.

Are sessions confidential?
Yes, with five specific exceptions required by Ontario law: risk of serious imminent harm to self or others; suspected abuse or neglect of a child under 16; suspected abuse of a long-term care resident; a court order or subpoena; and a disclosure of sexual abuse by a regulated health professional (which must be reported to that professional’s regulatory college). The privacy & confidentiality page has more detail.
What if I'm in crisis right now?
Yathra Psychotherapy is not a crisis service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call or text 9-8-8 (Canada Suicide Crisis Helpline) or 911. For non-emergency information and referral to local mental health services, Connex Ontario can help — 1-866-531-2600.
